Raft Guide School is designed for prospective commercial river guides with USA Raft on the French Broad, Nolichucky, Nantahala and Watauga Rivers.
Learn the basics of raft guiding, including water reading skills, hydrology, raft maneuvers, paddle techniques, river scouting and river rescue techniques. Our comprehensive whitewater rafting guide training schools are taught by our senior trip leaders, many of whom have 15+ years of guiding experience.
USA Raft/Mountain Adventure Guides is recognized as a leading whitewater rafting outfitter in the southeast. Our raft guide training school on the Nolichucky River is led by Glenn Goodrich, the Godfather of river guides, according to Paddler Magazine.
Preferential consideration will be given to successful graduates of Raft Guide School for employment with USA Raft French Broad, Nantahala, Watauga and Nolichucky Rivers. An offer of employment depends on your progress and attitude. Guides who are hired will need to take CPR and First Aid Training if they don't already have certification (an additional fee if we certify you). Guides who are hired and are fully available any day to work full time through August 9th, 2010 will be given a $175 bonus to compensate for the training fee.
Raft Guide School Includes
6 full days of training: mix of on the water and classroom.Housing and Meals
Lunch is provided each day during guide school. Limited housing and/or camping is available at the French Broad River Outpost. Camping and a shower house are available at the Nantahala & Nolichucky River Outposts. No pets.
Raft Guide Training is Unpaid
River guide trainees receive expert, specialized training for which there is a non-refundable fee. We strongly encourage you to be Red Cross certifird in CPR and Standard First Aid BEFORE you enter raft guide school!
Raft Guide School is $175.00 per person. Space is very limited.

Register for Raft Guide School
To apply, either (1) fill out the Raft Guide School Registration downloaded from our website and mail it together with a check or credit card information, (2) fax the Application with credit card information, then mail the signed hard-copy, or (3) call with credit card information for immediate application (if you call, you must also fill out and mail the Application within 7 days). Applications are processed in the order in which they are received. Although there is no final deadline for accepting applications, we encourage early application, as space is limited per school.
Hiring Process after Core Training
We will invite individuals who have shown a strong commitment, aptitude and good attitude to continue training following raft guide school. Follow up training will focus on intensive on water guiding of the boats, "riding along" on commercial trips with experienced trip leaders and seasoned guides, and working hard to check-out to become a professional, paid raft guide. Depending on your aptitude, we expect training guides to be close to starting their check-out runs with our trip leaders in 1-3 weeks depending on you and the river you are training on.

Our doors are open from mid-March through October with our peak season being June through August. We are looking for energetic, people-oriented individuals, who are committed to working and playing hard. Our season runs from March to November, with our greatest need for staff occurring during the summer months.
Raft Guide Employment Application Process
Minimum Qualifications: Raft Guide applicants must be 19 years old, have finished a year of college, and be eligible to work in the United States without USA Raft/Mountain Adventure Guides sponsorship. Raft guide employment is subject to an evaluation of river skills, level of commitment, attitude, availability, application, and interview. Working guides are required to provide their own PFD, river knife, whistle, helmet and throw bag (available at our cost in our outpost), and must keep their first aid and CPR certifications current. Trip leaders must be at least 21+, have current WFA or higher certification, and CPR, and have river rescue training. *** If you have no previous commercial whitewater rafting guide experience do not fill out the Raft Guide Application, which is for experienced guides. You will need to attend our whitewater rafting guide school to be considered for employment.
Housing: USA Raft offers space for pitching your own tent. Bunk rooms may be available at the Nolichucky and French Broad outposts. Speak to the river manager about this option. No pets allowed.
Drug Policy: USA Raft adheres to a zero tolerance policy for use or possession of drugs on our property or impairment at work.
Behavior: USA Raft expects considerate behavior in our workplace and housing, and in the larger community.
